Structural Lintel Omitted Above Reduced Window Opening
The window openings were constructed smaller than the formed structural lintel . Instead of resolving the dimensional discrepancy through an approved redesign, additional masonry or infill was constructed above the windows without installing the required lintel or other verified structural support. A window opening must not be assumed to support masonry unless it has been specifically designed and certified to do so.
This creates a risk of masonry cracking, displacement, window-frame distortion and local collapse, with the potential for falling materials and serious injury. The affected area should be isolated and assessed by the structural engineer, with an approved permanent support detail installed before work continues.

Context
The issue was identified during construction of a Commercial building with masonry walls and feature window openings. The lintels delivered to site were larger than the openings formed in the blockwork. The surrounding masonry was subsequently built to accommodate the reduced window size, but the intended lintel support was omitted and no approved alternative load-bearing detail was evident. The transferable lesson
Changes to window dimensions must be treated as a formal design change, not resolved through unapproved site alterations. Reducing an opening or adding masonry above a smaller frame changes the load path and may require a redesigned lintel, arch or other structural support. Window frames must never be assumed to carry masonry loads unless specifically designed and certified for that purpose. The revised detail must be approved by the structural engineer before construction, with the installation inspected before it is concealed.
Recommended action
Check all window dimensions against the approved drawings and opening schedule before manufacturing or constructing the surrounding masonry. If a supplied window does not match the formed opening, stop work and raise a formal design query. Do not infill the opening, omit a lintel or alter the load path without an approved structural design. The structural engineer should provide a revised detail confirming the lintel or alternative support, required bearings, masonry arrangement and any temporary support. Where applicable, the detail should also coordinate cavity trays, damp-proofing, insulation and fire-stopping. Establish an exclusion zone and provide temporary support where unstable masonry is suspected. Inspect and photograph the completed work before it is concealed, and update the as-built and change-control records.
Limitations and application
The need for a lintel and the required remedial solution will depend on the wall construction, opening width, masonry loads, floor or roof loads above, and whether an engineered arch or other support forms part of the approved design. A photograph alone cannot confirm the complete load path or structural adequacy. Some proprietary window systems may be designed to carry limited loads, but this must be demonstrated by certified design information and must not be assumed. Any cracking, movement or unsupported masonry should be treated cautiously, with temporary support and an exclusion zone provided where necessary. The final assessment and remedial detail must be prepared or approved by the structural engineer.
