Incorrect Materials installed in Facade Framework

The façade support framework had been assembled using small aluminium angles and flat aluminium strips instead of the specified structural T-sections required to support stone panels weighing approximately 100 kg each. The flat strips appeared to be connected to the angles using only a single self-drilling Tek screw at each junction. This unapproved arrangement may provide inadequate resistance to dead load, wind load, rotation, pull-out and progressive connection failure. Failure of the framework could result in the detachment and fall of heavy stone panels, presenting a serious risk to workers and the public. The installation should be stopped, isolated and reviewed urgently by the responsible façade structural engineer.

Context

During the construction of a stone-clad rainscreen façade, the carrier framework was inspected while the external stone panels were being lifted into position. Each panel weighed approximately 100 kg. The inspection focused on whether the vertical support profiles, horizontal rails and their connections matched the approved structural façade design and provided a continuous, adequately fixed load path back to the building structure. The façade framework had been constructed using small aluminium angle sections and flat aluminium strips rather than the specified T-sections. The flat strips appeared to be supported by the angles and secured at each connection with only one self-drilling Tek screw. This non-standard arrangement was being used to support stone façade panels weighing approximately 100 kg each, without visible evidence that the revised load path or connections had been structurally designed or approved.

The transferable lesson

Structural façade components must not be substituted, reduced or fabricated from alternative sections without a documented design assessment and approval from the responsible façade structural engineer. The complete load path, including profiles, brackets, fixings and connections, must be capable of safely supporting the panel dead load, wind actions and installation loads. Site-made arrangements using single fixings must never replace the specified support system without verified calculations and an approved detail.
