Context
The observation was made during an external inspection of a multi-storey commercial building with a glazed and stone-clad façade. Several glazing units displayed noticeably different colours and reflectivity from adjacent panels, indicating possible incorrect orientation of the coated glass. The issue affected the visual consistency of the completed elevation and raised concerns about whether the UV or solar-control coating would perform as specified. During inspection of the completed façade, several glazed panels appeared to have been installed in the wrong orientation. The affected panes displayed noticeably different colours and levels of reflectivity when viewed externally, creating an inconsistent façade appearance. This suggested that the coated or UV/solar-control face of the glass had not been positioned in accordance with the approved glazing specification and manufacturer’s installation requirements.
The transferable lesson
The orientation of coated glazing must be checked before and during installation, as the different faces may appear similar at close range. Installing panels the wrong way round can create visible colour variations and prevent the UV, solar-control or thermal coating from performing as designed. Glass identification markings, approved drawings and manufacturer’s requirements must be followed, with the completed façade regularly inspected from a suitable external viewing distance.
Recommended action
Verify the required orientation of every glazing unit against the approved glazing schedule and manufacturer’s instructions before installation. Clearly mark the internal and external faces, brief installers and record orientation checks within the inspection and test plan. Approve a benchmark installation and inspect completed glazing from a suitable external distance and under different lighting conditions. Any panels showing inconsistent colour or reflectivity should be investigated before access equipment is removed or the façade is accepted.
Limitations and application
Differences in colour or reflectivity do not automatically confirm that glazing has been installed incorrectly, as appearance can vary due to lighting, viewing angle, reflections, glass batch, heat treatment or coating type. Orientation must be verified using manufacturer markings, approved specifications and specialist testing where required. Any remedial work should be agreed with the façade designer and glass manufacturer.
