Electrical Socket Positioned Directly Behind a Hob

A double electrical socket and associated controls were installed immediately behind the cooking hob. Any appliance connected at this location would require its flexible lead to pass close to, or potentially across, the heated cooking surface. The cable could contact a hot hob zone, pan or naked flame, causing the insulation to soften or melt and creating a risk of electric shock, short circuit or fire. The outlet should be relocated to a safe and accessible position in accordance with the approved kitchen layout, electrical design and appliance manufacturer’s instructions.

Context

The issue was identified during an inspection of a newly installed residential kitchen. A double socket outlet and several electrical controls had been positioned on the wall directly behind an electric hob, within the width of the cooking area. The installation was intended for normal domestic use, where portable appliances could be plugged in and their flexible leads could pass close to hot cooking zones and pans. The arrangement required review before occupation and handover. A double socket outlet and several electrical controls were installed directly behind the hob and within the width of the cooking area. The lead could be exposed to heat, steam or grease, causing its insulation to soften or melt and creating a risk of electric shock, short circuit or fire. The location also required users to reach across the hob to operate or disconnect the accessories.

The transferable lesson

UK standards do not give a blanket “300 mm from a hob” rule. The recognised position is: BS 7671 Regulation 522.2.1 requires wiring systems and accessories to be protected from harmful heat. Adequate separation is one accepted method. Current industry guidance states that an accessory positioned at least 100 mm horizontally from the edge of a hob is likely to satisfy BS 7671, subject to the appliance manufacturer’s instructions. A socket, switch or control should not be positioned immediately above a hob because a user may be burned when reaching across it and a connected appliance lead could contact a hot surface and be damaged. Cooker controls intended for isolation or emergency switching must be readily accessible and convenient to operate. Electrical Safety First technical guidance Approved Document P requires domestic electrical installations to be designed with appropriate protection against thermal damage and without presenting electric-shock or fire hazards. Approved Document P In the photograph, the double socket is positioned directly behind and within the width of the hob, rather than horizontally clear of it. A plugged-in appliance could therefore leave its flexible cable hanging towards the cooking zones or hot pans. This arrangement conflicts with recognised BS 7671 guidance and should be raised as a design and installation defect. The outlets should be relocated to the side of the hob, normally at least 100 mm horizontally from its edge, or farther away where required by the hob manufacturer or the project specification.

Limitations and application

BS 7671 does not prescribe a universal minimum distance between an electrical accessory and a hob. The commonly referenced 100 mm horizontal separation is technical guidance, not an absolute rule, and greater clearance may be required by the appliance manufacturer, electrical designer or project specification. The appropriate location also depends on the hob type, accessory function, surrounding materials and foreseeable use of portable appliances. A photograph alone cannot confirm circuit protection, cable routing or whether each switch forms part of the cooker installation. Final compliance and any remedial action should be determined by a competent electrician using the approved design, manufacturer’s instructions and an assessment of the actual risks.
