Electrical Conduit Improperly Secured to Medical Gas Pipework
Zinc-plated electrical conduit was secured directly to copper medical gas pipes using adhesive tape instead of being independently supported. Medical gas pipework must not be used as a support for electrical services or subjected to additional loads, abrasion or movement from unrelated installations.
Direct contact between dissimilar metals may also promote corrosion where moisture is present, while the taped junction obstructs inspection and could damage the copper pipe. The conduit should be removed from the medical gas installation, independently supported using an approved fixing system, and provided with the required separation. The copper pipes should then be inspected for abrasion, deformation or corrosion by a competent medical gas specialist.

Context
The issue was identified during an inspection of mechanical and electrical services within a ceiling or service void on a healthcare project. Copper medical gas pipework had already been installed when a zinc-plated electrical conduit was routed across it and taped directly to the pipes. The area was due to be concealed by the ceiling installation, meaning the unauthorised support arrangement and any resulting pipe damage could have become difficult to inspect or access after completion. A section of zinc-plated electrical conduit had been routed across copper medical gas pipework and secured directly to the pipes using adhesive tape. The conduit had no evident independent support at the crossing point, causing the medical gas pipes to carry or restrain an unrelated electrical service. The arrangement created direct contact between dissimilar metals and introduced risks of abrasion, movement, corrosion and damage to the medical gas pipework. It also obstructed inspection of the affected pipe surfaces.
The transferable lesson
Medical gas pipework is a safety-critical service and must never be used to support, restrain or secure other building services. Electrical conduit and all other services require independent, correctly designed supports and suitable separation from medical gas installations. Service interfaces must be coordinated before installation to prevent contact, abrasion, imposed loads and corrosion between dissimilar metals. Informal fixes such as tape or cable ties are not acceptable substitutes for approved support systems.
Recommended action
Coordinate medical gas and electrical service routes before installation, with defined separation and independent support zones. Provide the electrical conduit with approved brackets or channel supports fixed to the building structure, ensuring it does not touch, load or restrict access to the medical gas pipes. Remove any tape or unauthorised fixings under the control of the project’s Authorised Person for the medical gas pipeline system. Have the copper pipework inspected by a competent medical gas specialist for abrasion, deformation or corrosion, and have the conduit checked by a competent electrician. Extend the inspection to similar concealed service areas, rectify any repeated defects, and record the completed work before ceilings or access panels are closed.
Limitations and application
The required separation and support arrangement will depend on the approved medical gas design, electrical installation, service environment and applicable healthcare standards. Contact between zinc-plated steel and copper does not automatically cause immediate failure, but corrosion risk increases where moisture or condensation is present. Medical gas pipework must not be moved, bent, disconnected or repaired without the appropriate permit, isolation and control procedures. Any suspected damage should be assessed by the Authorised Person and a competent medical gas specialist, with testing undertaken where required. Remedial work must also maintain electrical earthing, bonding, fire-stopping and access requirements.
